Darchen: Starting Point of the Mount Kailash Kora

Darchen is a small town at the southern foot of Mount Kailash, at about 4,675 meters above sea level. It is the main base for pilgrims and trekkers preparing for the Kora. Most travelers stay here before the trek to rest, acclimatize, organize their equipment, and make final preparations.

As the main base for the Mount Kailash trek, Darchen has hotels, restaurants, small shops, and basic trekking supplies, where you can pick up snacks, drinking water, and other essentials.

From Darchen, the classic Kora begins north toward Dirapuk Monastery and eventually returns to the town after circling Mount Kailash. Since the Kora ends back in Darchen, you can also leave your large luggage at your hotel in Darchen and carry only what you need for the Kora.

Mount Kailash Kora Day 2 Map: Dirapuk Monastery to Zutulpuk Monastery via Dolma La Pass

Day 2 is the most challenging day of the Mount Kailash Kora, taking you from Dirapuk Monastery to Zutulpuk Monastery via Dolma La Pass. The trek covers about 22 km and usually takes 8 to 10 hours, with a long climb followed by a steep descent.

From Dirapuk, the trail gradually climbs toward Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters, the highest point of the entire Kora. The trail becomes steeper as you approach the pass, so walking at a steady pace and taking breaks when needed will make the climb more manageable. Colorful prayer flags mark the top of Dolma La, an important sacred place along the pilgrimage route.

After crossing Dolma La Pass, the trail descends past Gauri Kund and continues through the valley toward Zutulpuk Monastery. The descent can be steep in some sections, but the trail gradually becomes easier as you move to lower elevations.

Zutulpuk Monastery is the traditional overnight stop on the second day of the Kora. Accommodation here is simple, providing a place to eat, rest, and recover before the final day’s trek back to Darchen.
